Most Revit site tool reviews were written before Revit 2024 and still talk about Toposurfaces, Building Pads and Graded Regions as if nothing changed. A lot did. Revit now has a solid terrain element, excavation, recessed sub-divisions and configurable point limits, and a review that ignores them will steer you to add-ins you may no longer need.

This review goes through what the native site tools do in Revit 2024 to 2027, quoting Autodesk's help for each, then covers the gaps that still need another tool.

## The short verdict

For architectural site work (placing a building, setting levels, cutting sections, modelling paths and parking, rough cut and fill) **Revit 2025 and later is now good enough on its own** once you have a decent terrain file. It is still not a civil tool. Roads, pipe networks and engineered grading belong in Civil 3D or similar, linked in.

The biggest weakness is not a missing tool. It is the input: Revit cannot make terrain, only import it.

## Revit's native site tools, version by version

All of these live on the **Massing & Site tab > Model Site panel**, under Toposolid: Create from Sketch, Create from Import, Sub-Divide and Graded Region ([Autodesk, Toposolids](https://help.autodesk.com/cloudhelp/2026/ENU/Revit-Model/files/GUID-95E3A3A6-BD9F-44B0-8847-E84736E3BB1E.htm?ref=blog.topo-grapher.com)).

### Revit 2024: the Toposolid arrives

Autodesk's release notes: "Create topographic elements as solid geometry." Toposolids "are created from imported CAD or CSV files", or by sketching a boundary and adding elevation points, and "can be cut by other model geometry" ([What's New in Revit 2024: Toposolids](https://help.autodesk.com/cloudhelp/2024/ENU/Revit-WhatsNew/files/GUID-5BEB235D-FE4B-41B0-BA52-619E5FD679FA.htm?ref=blog.topo-grapher.com)).

- **Create from Sketch:** draw a boundary, add points. Fine for small or hypothetical sites.
- **Create from Import:** from DWG, DXF, DGN with 3D data, or a CSV points file (button: **Create from CSV**).
- **Shape editing:** add points and split lines to adjust the surface.
- **Sub-Divide:** mark areas such as paths or lawns with a different material.
- **Graded Region:** develop proposed levels against existing ground with cut and fill reporting.

**Rating for 2024:** a solid base, but cutting a building into the ground still needed a mass or void.

### Revit 2025: excavation and editing

The 2025 release fixed most of the 2024 frustrations ([What's New in Revit 2025: Toposolid Enhancements](https://help.autodesk.com/cloudhelp/2025/ENU/Revit-WhatsNew/files/GUID-50FB6EAF-5308-487B-9BF0-A59C36126B96.htm?ref=blog.topo-grapher.com)):

- **Excavate:** "Excavate volume from a toposolid with an intersecting floor, roof, or toposolid element." Autodesk notes it "reduces your need to use mass elements to cut toposolids". Excavations can be removed if the design changes.
- **Shafts:** "the bottom of the shaft is respected" instead of cutting all the way through.
- **Hosting on cut surfaces:** railings and planting can sit on the exposed surface after a cut.
- **Top Plane elevation base:** place and measure points from the top plane, so you do not have to calculate depths.
- **Toposolid from a mass face**, which updates when the mass changes.
- **Smooth Shading** and **contours visible while editing**.

**Rating for 2025:** the version where Revit site modelling became practical without workarounds.

### Revit 2026: sub-divisions, point limits, accuracy

([What's New in Revit 2026: Toposolid Enhancements](https://help.autodesk.com/cloudhelp/2026/ENU/Revit-WhatsNew/files/GUID-B15F26EC-57C1-4570-8EAD-1A0C8089A23A.htm?ref=blog.topo-grapher.com))

- **Recessed sub-divisions:** "A positive offset places the subdivision above the host, while a negative offset places it below the host. A negative offset excavates the host, and the excavation volume is reported." Roads and sunken paths no longer need tricks.
- **Sub-division types:** material and contour inheritance now come from a Toposolid type. Autodesk warns that "when upgrading models that use toposolids and sub-divisions, some legacy parameters are no longer valid."
- **Point thresholds:** NativeToposolidMaxPointThreshold and LinkToposolidMaxPointThreshold in Revit.ini, range 10,000 to 50,000, default 20,000.
- **Graded region volumes:** cut and fill is now "calculated exclusively within the boundary of the new toposolid".
- **Linked topography:** better precision when reloading.
- **Cut Void Stability:** a setting that nudges void geometry by a tiny random amount so difficult cuts succeed, with any change reported.

**Rating for 2026:** the best version for imported terrain, because dense data no longer has to be cut to 10,000 points.

### Revit 2027: more site modelling

Autodesk's Revit 2027 feature list marks site design as new, with "new modeling capabilities" for Toposolids and site elements and snapping to 3D points in underlay geometry, including linked DWGs ([Revit 2027 features](https://www.autodesk.com/products/revit/product-details?ref=blog.topo-grapher.com)). Read the 2027 release notes for your build before you plan around a specific behaviour; third-party write-ups disagree on the details.

## Where native Revit still falls short

- **No terrain source.** Revit has no built-in way to fetch real ground levels for an address. You import a survey, a civil surface or a points file.
- **Point limits.** Even at the 2026 maximum of 50,000 points, a large site at fine spacing has to be thinned. Autodesk's own advice for big files is to split them, and it notes that "multiple smaller files may decrease system performance."
- **No civil design.** No corridors, no pipe networks, no engineered grading surfaces.
- **Coordinate setup is on you.** Revit expects geometry "within 10 miles or 16 kilometers of the model's internal origin" ([Autodesk, About the Maximum Distance Limit](https://help.autodesk.com/cloudhelp/2026/ENU/Revit-Model/files/GUID-3F79BF5A-F051-49F3-951E-D3E86F51BECC.htm?ref=blog.topo-grapher.com)). Raw national-grid coordinates often break that.

## What fills the gaps: add-ins and data sources

People searching for "topo tools for Revit" usually want one of four things. Here is which kind of tool does what.

| Need | Tool type | Notes |
| ----------------------------------------- | --------------------------------------------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ |
| Real terrain for an address | **Terrain data services** (Topo-grapher and others) | Produce a CSV or DWG from public elevation data. Topo-grapher's CSV is X, Y, Z in metres relative to a UTM origin given in the file name. |
| Civil-grade surfaces | **Civil 3D**, linked as topography | Use Revit's Link Topography; Revit 2026 improved its precision. |
| Repeating the same steps on many projects | **Dynamo / pyRevit scripts** | Built on the Revit API's Toposolid.Create. See [BIM terrain automation](https://blog.topo-grapher.com/bim-terrain-automation-for-faster-site-models/). |
| Surveyor's DWG of points or contours | **Revit itself** (Create from CAD) | Needs real 3D Z values; Autodesk: "Each contour line must be at the correct Z value." |

On free plugins: before installing one, check whether it predates Revit 2024\. Many "topo" add-ins were built for Toposurfaces and either do not support Toposolids or do something Revit 2025 and 2026 now do natively.

## A practical Revit terrain workflow

### 1\. Set coordinates first

Decide the shared coordinate setup before the terrain arrives. If you have a surveyor's DWG, Autodesk's route is to link it and use **Acquire Coordinates**, which aligns the survey point and project base point with the link ([Autodesk, Link a DWG File and Acquire Its Coordinates](https://help.autodesk.com/cloudhelp/2026/ENU/Revit-Model/files/GUID-77BBFD78-8389-4FD4-8C95-929D92AAC590.htm?ref=blog.topo-grapher.com)).

### 2\. Import a file sized for your version

Keep the file under 10,000 points for Revit 2024 and 2025, or under your Revit.ini threshold from 2026\. Choose the spacing yourself rather than letting Revit downsample.

### 3\. Model design moves with the right tool

Excavate for building footprints and car parks (2025+). Negative-offset sub-divisions for roads and paths (2026+). Graded Region for proposed levels. Shape editing only for small local fixes, not to repair a bad import.

### 4\. Check in section and against known levels

Cut sections through entrances and boundaries, and compare a few spot levels with the source. A smooth 3D view hides offsets that a section shows at once.

## When native Revit is enough, and when it is not

Native Revit is enough for feasibility, planning drawings, landscape concepts and building-led site coordination on most plots. Move the ground design to civil software when the project has road geometry, drainage design, large earthworks balances or survey-grade setting out. Revit should still receive that work as linked topography, so the architectural model stays coordinated.

## FAQ

**What are the site tools in Revit 2026?**
Toposolid Create from Sketch, Create from Import, Sub-Divide and Graded Region on the Massing & Site tab, plus Excavate, Simplify Topography, Smooth Shading and contour display settings.

**Is there a free topography plugin for Revit?**
Several exist, but check that they support Toposolids (Revit 2024+). For getting terrain in, a free CSV from a terrain data service and Revit's own Create from CSV is often all you need. One coming soon from [Topo-grapher](https://topo-grapher.com/?ref=blog.topo-grapher.com)!

**Does Revit 2027 change Toposolids?**
Autodesk lists new Toposolid and site modelling capabilities and 3D snapping in underlays for 2027\. Check the release notes for your build for specifics.

**Can Revit do cut and fill?**
Yes, through Graded Region and excavation volume parameters. Revit 2026 made graded-region volumes more accurate by limiting them to the new Toposolid's boundary.

**Should I still use Building Pads?**
Building Pads belong to the legacy Toposurface. In Revit 2025 and later, use Excavate with the building's floor.

**Why is my imported terrain jagged or far from the building?**
Usually coordinates. Revit wants geometry within 16 km of the internal origin; bring points in relative to a local origin and use shared coordinates for the real-world position.
